I was currently working on a function that move a 3dsmax '.ase' file to the .x format (8.5 version).
I just have to finish the 'MeshTextureCoords' and the last thing to do is to optimize my 'MeshNormals' list (very huge for the moment).
It's already working(yessss!) without the mapping(coming very soon tonight!), and all the 'smooth group' are safe, really fine to see how the light was working on the model.
I have a question about the MeshTextureCoords.
It seems that a vertex only have one texture coordinate (X,Y), that mean that i can't build a model with merged vertex between 2 different mat'Id, am i alright?
I'll sent you my first model when my program will be OK

At least i eventually had an idea on how you can make the elvator moves without any calculation, the position of the elevator is directly had in the mesh, each position have a different mat'id, and then, you just have to switch the opacity and specular to ON/OFF depending on the position of the elevator, don't know if you see what i mean????
I can build a special model for you if you are interest in this method.
I see in the forum that it's possible to have the source code of fms, could it be possible??
