Would it not be good to be able to postion the plane so it's not plum in the centre of the screen but higher up?
When flying high it's easy to loose oriention once the ground disappears off the bottom of the screen and the area of screen above the plane is not particularly interesting anyway.

Another option is to turn off the zoom feature or zoom less. Also try hitting the view buttons like the down arrow on the numeric key pad to pull back the point of view.
