Controller won't work - Controller

I have just bought an electric helicopter which came with FMS and a Smartech controller. My computer runs Windows XP. I have installed FMS but it does not seem to recognise the controller at all - it works okay off keyboard. From reading the board I gather that I cannot run the controller from the Printer Port, so I now have it plugged in to the USB port, but the same thing happens.
Is there a simple (please!) explanation of what I need to do - do I need to buy something else to make it work - if so what?
