Any news of a fix for ATI Radeon 9500/9700 owners? I've been watching thew boards, but have not seen anything yet.
Thanks.

ATI Graphics problem - Some Observations
No solution but a clearer idea of the problem on my PC (Athlon processor, ATI Radeon 9500 128M card). The background and the model seem to be at diffeent heights.

If I load the glider DG100 - no model shows on the screen, but press "W" for a winch launch and hold up elevator for 5 seconds. On my PC the glider suddenly appears after a few seconds about 10 times its wing span above the ground. It flies correctly but if you go anywhere below the height at which it first appeared it "crashes" in mid-air and locks the programme.

On my PC this works with helis and the airbus - they seem to be "below the ground" when first loaded and you cannot see them. But Press "I" then full throttle, hold in some up elavator for about 5 seconds and again the model appears, flying away from you at a good height. Everthing works OK until you try to land, then it "crashes" and stops about 10 wingspans above the ground.

Any one out there know how to get the background and the model back at the right levels?

I have a 9500Pro... got it to work by turning off textures... and setting hardware acceleration to the middle in the slider. App looks like crap.. but works correctly... You would think they would spend some time fixing this... as most users have some sort of ATI card. Guess I will have to look at RipMax or Great Planes again... too bad... this thing looked promising.

SkyRaider,
Yeah, I got tired of waiting for an ATI fix so I bought Realflight G2. It cost way more than I wanted but the flight model is good and they include a USB controller.

It's a shame that this problem exist.
I understand the there's nothing much the developers can do about it so i tried something else.
At you can enter some feedback about the catalyst driver. I entered the problems i'm having with fms.
Alltough i know it's highly unlikely that they look in to it it's worth a try.
The probability that they take a look at it should increase the more that are complaining so if you're having problems, make a post.

you wonder why this problem hasn't been solved already, why the developers have not posted some kind of patch ... I will try to explain ...

we have been developing long on a ATI Rage 128 card without problem ... and we have no newer ATI card to debug our software on. The error, bug or problem could be nearly everywhere in the code. Without directly debugging on the hardware, there is no real chance to find / solve it.

the FMS uses some DirectX 6 Direct3D Retained Mode interface for the 3D graphics, and this via the DelphiX library. This DelphiX library by Hiroyuki Hori is really large ... and the development of it stopped somewhere in the year 2000 ... if the problem is somewhere in that code, it could get very hard to find / solve ...

some of the 3D graphics related code in the last FMS release is really bad ... if the problem is in the FMS and not the DelphiX library, it should be possibel to run some older (simpler) FMS versions or some of the very basic DelphiX demos. You could try once the FMS 2.0 Beta 4 on these ATI cards:

we are working on a complete new 3D graphic engine with Direct3D IM (DirectX 9.0). Because this is completely different, there shouldn't be any problems with the ATI radeon cards, at least not the old one. I will post some demo of the 3D part when finished ... though that hardware specific problems can be removed very early ...

because the I will move the old 3D graphcis code to trash soon, I don't really have the motivation to debug it much longer. But the new engine is not finished yet, and it could still take some time till the first release ... though if it is possible to find out more in detail where the problem with the old code is, we could solve it perhaps.

And one thing not to forget: The time we have to work on the FMS is limited ... though we try to do with it the best
I hope you understand now a bit more why this problem still exists ...

Hi Michael
It it's possible i would like to take a look it at.
I've not done any real 3d programming so i don't think i will be able to find any bugs in the code but i have knowledge in c and c++ so i could probably locate the source of the problem. most of us have quite fast machines and with a debug version i could try tweeking parameters and try to find out it there's some certain part of the hardware acceleration that's causing this that could possibly be disabled in drivers or source without any large performance decrease.

Hi everyone. I've been following the forum for a few days, meanwhile experimenting with my setup. I hope my 'findings' might point to something.
My platform is MSWinXP/Home.
My old system used an Nvidia card with 64 MB and ran FMS superbly.
My new system has an ATI Radeon 9500/128MB graphics card , and I have experienced very similar problems to others on this forum.
My monitor is an LCD by Samsung and I run it with an optimum resolution of 1280 x 1024. It has 'Pivot' software installed, so can be used in either 'portrait' or 'landscape' modes.
Now, cutting to the chase . . . If I uninstall FMS, reboot, and reinstall it, in landscape mode, it will not run. i.e. black screen until simulation is initialised. Then only background, no model et.c.

If I repeat the exercise with my screen in portrait mode, FMS installs itself in window mode. I can stretch the window to fill the screen width, maintaining it's aspect ratio (because a tall thin world looks naff!) If I attempt to change resolution however everything goes pear-shaped!

Provided I keep it in Window mode, it runs beautifully.

One odd thing, when I select my desktop Joystick (Logitech) the channels FMS installs are scrambled and I have to sort them out manually in the calibrate box. If I select my USB/buddy-box/Txr they are different again, and need re-calibration.
From then on though, it's business as usual. Splendidly realistic flying, particularly so with the buddy box link.

Forgive the extended length of this post - I hope it's useful.

And thanks a bunch for this superb program.
