RealFlight Controller

Postby ZappaBark » Fri Jun 07, 2002 6:23 pm

Sorry if this has been asked too much... Does anyone know where I can buy *just* the USB RealFlight controller, as opposed to the whole sim w/ the controler?

I use FMS with a laptop, so I don't have a game port to interface with - a parallel port or serial port would work, but I can't find anywhere to buy that interface either! I realize I could make one, but I'm lazy :-)

Thanks,

ZB

Why do you need the RealFlight controller in particular ? You can buy a USB controller that works with FMS and other programs from For less money you could also get a serial i/f from the same place.

I don't really, I just thought it would be easier and work more smoothly to have a dedicated sim controller.

Anyway, thanks for the link, I think I'll get that USB connector.

I want a dedicated controller like the RealFlight box too. The last thing I want to do is interface to my transmitter. I want something plugged in and ready to go, but with the same type of sticks and trims. My gamepad doesn't cut it.

Thanks,

The realflight usb interlink connector can be purchased seperately from the software. Is is called the G2 upgrade. I would have gotten this for my boys but it cost $140.00 and they could not assure me that it would work with FMS.

I have also read on this forum that FMS has trouble with certain types of interfaces when using Windows XP Pro- which I use.

I use the RealFlight Controller (USB version) with FMS and it works really well. Set the channels in this order: 42134213. As setting them with the defaults 12345678 just doesn't cut it.

Cheers!

wolffsoft,
I have a thrustmaster USB stick and throttle on ID#1 and the realflight USB controller on ID#2. I cannot get FMS to "see" the rudder and throttle on the left stick of the Realflight controller.

How do you manage that problem?
Is the Realflight controller the only joystick on your computer?
If not, is the Realflight controller set up as ID#1?

I don't know how I got it to work Ken, as it just does. I don't have any other joysticks and it is set to ID#1. Although the RealFlight Controller doesn't work with MS Flight Simulator 98. The switches work (if you assign them), but the joysticks doesn't do anything. Even though they calibrate just fine.

Cheers!

wolffsoft,
Okay, you answered my question. Your Real flight controller is set at ID#1. Mine is set at ID#2 which is the cause of my problem with FMS. Thanks for clearing that up!

I would think the ID# shouldn't have any effect on any operation of the controller. As all any joystick or controller needs is there own unique number. And picking any number should work just fine.

Cheers!

The problem lies in the fact that although the FMS controller interface allows you to choose "joystick", it does not allow you to choose which joystick. FMS allows you to assign any function to any of the first 8 channels it sees. This would be fine for most computers having two joysticks since most joystick/throttle/rudder combinations only use 4 channels each. The Thrustmaster Cougar joystick and throttle with rudder pedals, however, uses 6 channels. As a result, only two of the channels on my Realflight controller are seen by FMS.

The problem could be resolved, I would think, by modifying the contoller mapping interface so that FMS would allow you to control, say, the first 12 channels it sees.

Hi Ken... Okay I gotcha. As I forgot that FMS doesn't allow you to select which joysticks. Thanks again Ken. <grin>

Cheers!

I'm new to FMs but if it's any help, I have a 'Logitech Wingman Rumblepad' which works perfectly with this software. It has two thumb operated analogue sticks and once set up correctly is just like using a real transmitter.

Might save people lots of trouble to use one of these rather than trying to interface a real transmitter?
