Now to try to fly the real thing - Which slow flyer to buy?

Postby johnhlong » Sat Apr 06, 2002 2:23 pm

OK, Now this might sound lame but I want to get into a slow flyer.

I have some 2 ch gliders that I have flown for aver 20 years.
I now can fly (Hover) my helicopter.

I want to get a slow flyer for my yard. (about 1 acre).

It would be nice if I could get into a 4ch plane.
What suggestions do you have for starters.

I am thinking about the new Zero that GWS just came out with. Even has retracts! My second choice is the Tiger Moth but it is only 3ch.

However, first it must be stable enought for a rookie in 4ch to fly. And I want one that flyes slow enough to fly in my yard.

Hi John,

To narrow this down, what do you prefer in the way of building?

Do you want a kit or ARF?

Do you want foam or balsa?

The less building the better, but I expect to do some building.
I would hate to get stuck with a real bomb just because I didn't do any work.

1. ARF
2. Build foam
3. Build balsa.

If I need to I will build any of the above. I want something I will enjoy for a while.

I am good at building any of the above, just lazy.
I realy did enjoy building the heli (Mechanical)!

I just received my Tax return and have permission from my wife (Sort of) so what should I get?

???

It looks like the Tiger Moth is highly recomended but it's not 4 ch. Would any of these park flyers be good trainers to learn stunts on before I try to do them on the helicopter :(

Hi John,

I suggest you check out www.nesail.com (Northeast Sailplanes) and then give them a call to see what they recommend. They have added a bunch of well-made nice ARF slow-flyers in the last few years. The ARFs are really good quality now, mostly built in Eastern Europe. The good ones are balsa. Cost is typically around $100-$150 not including motor, rx, servos, batteries, etc. Your existing gear may not cut it; you need really light small stuff. They will do you a deal everything you need if you want it. It can add up!

Tell them about your desire for 4 channels, and give them an idea of what sort of conditions you want to fly in. Some of the slowflyers require near dead calm if flown outside, which is too restrictive for me. Look for something that can fly in 5+ mph winds.

Let us know how it goes!

John, You should really check out this website.

They have wonderful articles on different types of electric aircraft and the forums board is the best in the country I think. Thanks Ray
