How can I get a USB port as a virtual COM port address?

... how can I use a USB port as a virtual COM port address? Background: I have a Dell Dimension PC 5150th This has no COM port & retrofitting is not possible because everything must be compatible with Dell.

I would like the free program FMS (Flight Simulator Model) version 2.0 Alpha 8.5 on this PC with Windows XP. When trying to start it, I get this error message:

fms.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. AppName: fms.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: kernel32.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512 offset: 00012aeb Application Error exception EcomPort in FMS modules. exe at 0008AFEC.

Does anyone know a possible free program, by which I mean the existing USB port connected with the remote control can respond and how does it work?
