My FMS 2 Alpha 85 has stopped working. It's been a few months since I last used it - it ran OK then. When I try to launch it now, it stops immediately with these error messages.

- FMS.exe Has encountered a problem & needs to close.

- Error Signature: AppName: fms.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: kernel32.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.3119 Offset: 00012a5b

- Exception Information: Code: 0x0eedfade Flags: 0x00000001 Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address: 0x000000007c812a5b

Thinking FMS may have gotten corrupted, I tried uninstalling & reinstalling a fresh one - without any luck. I'm at a loss. What's wrong here & how can I fix it?

I had something similar begin to occur about a week ago; I'd get blue screen crashes at certain times. Prior to this, FMS and SmartPropoPlus were both solid and reliable.

I got a few more crashes while flying, so also uninstalled, defragged, and then reinstalled. This time, the blue screen occurred when I was calibrating the joystick, and then again when I was setting exponential curves on my radio for heli flight.

Through a search here, I gleaned a hint about video drivers, so installed the latest drivers for my ATI X850 XL. I've only run FMS once after this update, but was able to "quickly" calibrate and fly both a sailplane and a heli. I also ran a scan (sfc /scannow) of my windows environment to ensure all files were in place.

I see no connection between my video drivers and the sound card interface and audio drivers (unless the last crashes were a coincidence). The only things that changes in my system are the Windows updates and Norton updates.

Will continue to fly and diagnose, right after backing up the rest of my system....

Hi Dave,

Sounds like different symptoms but perhaps a common cause.

I too updated my ATI video card drivers. I also cleaned the PC thorougly using System Mechanic, defragged, cleaned the registry, etc., etc. But so far, nothing has helped.

Version 7 runs fine here, so my hunch is that there is a bug(s) in 8.5. I've tried PM'ing Moeller but he hasn't replied. Too bad since 8.5 has some nice features.

I've tried to install FMS 8.5 and 8.3 on XP. In both cases I get the same error message about FMS.exe and kernal32.dll.

I was able to install and run beta 7 on XP. I have been running 8.3 on Windows 2000.

I would guess the patch level of XP has something to do with it. I noticed that both my xp machines are running the same version of kernal32.dll. And you say it used to work for you.
