Computer crashing

Postby Rolo » Sun May 21, 2006 2:29 pm

I have just purchased the FMS disc and Esky transmitter and uploaded it to my computer. This appears to be the 8.3 version.

My problem is that it keeps crashing my computer every time I try to change from one model to another or one scene to another. It sometimes crashes in any case. It also crashes when I click to come out of the program. I have tried downloading the 8.5 version and that does the same. Apart from this nuisance I also have to re-calibrate the program every time once my computer has re-booted.

Any suggestions before I consign it to the trash can!!

Almost all crashes are caused by small incompatibilities between the COMPONENTS of a system. Probably the majority of such problems with FMS have historically been caused somewhere between DirectX and the graphics adaptors. The only time I had any FMS crashes (with an early beta version) they were fixed by checking for the latest versions of all drivers etc but obviously an experienced computer user such as yourself will already have done that.

So as you insist that your system is fully compatible with FMS and you don't want to say anything about it or make any changes to it I can only wish you good luck with finding your problem ;).

Thank you Steve,

Searching for the latest drivers is constructive advice and I will most certainly follow that advice (even the most experienced of computerists can overlook the obvious :D ). I'll give it a go - many thanks.

Well, my computer tells me I already have all the latest drivers available to man and beast...so it seems I just need the luck you were wishing me, Steve.

Thanks for all the advice. Whilst searching for drivers etc; I had already gone into dxdiag and done every test available. Everything tells me my computer, drivers, USB ports, game controllers (even the Esky) and everything else I could find on there are working correctly.

I have never had any crashes on my comp until I installed FMS. I have used flight simulators, game controllers, and lots of other stuff before with no crashes... so being a bit of a detective I have deduced that this could possibly have something to do with FMS and not my computer...it's elementary my dear Watson!

Please do not think I am not grateful for all the advice and I have taked the advice given but it doesn't seem to be the answer.

I note that nobody else (in this thread at least) seems to have actually suffered continual crashes and are able to tell me what they did to resolve it. In fact a couple of other similar questions to mine in other threads seem to have been left unresolved...which leaves me to conclude that perhaps nobody really knows the answer.

I could fiddle with my comp for hours and not come up with a solution...in fact it is likely to do more harm than good since this problem seems unique to FMS.

However, thanks again to those who offered suggestions. At the moment, having downloaded Beta7, I am able to swap planes and scenery most of the time without any crashes and I am able to have some fun with it for quite some time before it pulls the fuse, which is a great improvement on the Alpha 8.3 disc that came with the kit and the 8.5 download...

...maybe my computer is just too perfect for FMS

And I've installed FMS on a couple of dozen different desktops and laptops for various people without any problem and hundreds, possibly thousands, of other people are running FMS without problems so I would conclude that the problem has something to do with your computer.

Obviously we're all lucky not to have a computer as good as yours ;).

An explanation ?
Reading the topic back from the beginning, what you write is so arroguant that maybe you don't deserve FMS. So it doesn't work for you and your very personal computer...?

Phildc,

I arrived in this forum as a new user of FMS and having found no results to my problem in old messages I then posted a perfectly civil, simple, and straight forward question with a request for help, from anyone who had had similar problems.

I received one of the most rude, abrupt and arrogant replies I've ever seen in any help forum and I was rather taken aback by this.

Nevertheless, I responded directly to that person in a fairly humorous manner even though I was rather annoyed.

I then received another message from somebody else who offered some constructive advice and a little humour indicated by an emoticon, and I was grateful for that.

I have replied in a similar manner since then and added emoticons to show that despite my frustrations I can still show some humour.

If this has come across as arrogant then there is little I can do about yours or anyone else's sense of humour.

Whilst you and many others may well have had a trouble free relationship with FMS you only have to read these boards to realise that there are many others having problems of one sort or another also, and many of these revolve around crashes, planes not responding, USB ports not being recognised, etc; etc; etc.

All I asked was if anyone else had similar problems to mine (and it seems some have but there is no result shown in the threads) could they please tell me how they resolved it - I didn't expect that question to be met with abuse!

There is conflict between FMS and my computer - that is pretty obvious, but I expected someone who knew the answer to respond in a pleasant manner. If you don't know the answer then why respond at all?

Be that as it may, I didn't come here to get into an argument - I have better things to do. It is obvious I'm not going to get a solution so I won't trouble this board again.
