Welcome to this forum!

It all depends on your connection cable! So, please tell us which cable you are using or planning to use.

This topic could maybe help you:

Hi Phil, it will be the RS connection not a USB.

If RS is nickname to RS-232 which is the serial input - then yes, you need to switch it on.

Serial:
Remember there are two types of cables that may be connected to the PC serial port:
- the microprocessor cable that gives a real RS232 signal, that can be tested with a terminal software or other RS232 tester, like my RS232Analyser. FMS recognises this as PIC serial (at 9600 or 19200 bps).
- the simpler (transistor) cable, that may need PPJoy depending on your Windows type. Without PPJoy, use the IRQ parallel/serial interface of FMS.
With PPJoy, FMS will see a joystick and not a serial input.

And you will definitely need a battery in there. When you're using a Tx for training the power comes from the Master Tx so you don't need the battery but when you're using it with a simulator it needs to provide its own power.

It is also a good idea to remove the crystal so your Tx isn't actually transmitting.

Connecting Tx

Thanks everybody for all your help, all cleared up now, had forgotten about the xtal, had wondered about having the aerial down whilst transmitting, remember that now.
Again a big thanks to all, very much appreciated.
Whilst I am on about this topic and why I have bought the cable and using my Futaba.
I bought the Esky outfit with the USB controller and could not get it to work because the set up on the prog was for any of the 3 Com ports and it would not recognise the USB input and nothing happened when the sticks were waggled as instructed, which I suppose was to be expected since there was no input, anybody else had this problem and got round it.
Also I wanted to set it up for Mode 1 as it comes as Mode 2, only way I can see to change that is change the numbers round on the set up for the channels.

My Esky has the USB connector and it seems to recognise it ok and works fine in that respect. The very occasional problem I have with my computer not recognising the USB port (or the hardware attached to it) is a problem I have had before with my comp and not just FMS.

With regards to my computer crashing...it actually switches itself off and then reboots. I've never had that happen before in all the years I've been using computers. This happened with the 8.3 disc that came with the Esky and was also happening when I downloaded 8.5, so I suppose it could have something to do with the Esky I don't know. I then read somewhere on these boards that somebody was having similar problems which were solved when they downloaded an earlier version, so I downloaded Beta 7 and it has improved - just the occasional crash now.

I have all the latest drivers and a fairly modern comp so I just don't know what else I can do to stop it crashing.

Maybe it is overheating?

Rolo,

I had the same problem with another graphics software and it turned out that I needed to provide a disk drive power connector to my graphics card. Once I loaded up a serious 3D program on my computer, the graphics card drew too much power from the PC bus, blanked my video screen and rebooted my PC. After much effort, I discovered that I needed to provide an additional source of power to the graphics card.

You might check into this for your computer.
