problem w computer simulation - computer not recognizing control

Okay...real new at this; we got our son a little cessna 182 for xmas from hobby shop; specifically bought this since it advertised inclusion of CD for flight simulation; software (fms) is freeware and installed fine (not happy that the video is in chinese & apparently can't change voices to english, but not real big deal)....main problem is cable supplied supposed to be very user friendly plugging directly from controls to the line in or mic plug of computer; have followed all directions supplied, but control is not being recognized by computer....we have several different computers throughout house and none work; can view the program and see the plane take off in demo mode, but cannot control it.....Please help!
