Is it realistic?

Postby GiZZeRR » Thu May 09, 2002 11:04 pm

I would like to start flying and have been using FMS with my Hitec Flash5 TX. I was going to start with electric and have been practicing with the Silkywind400 and also the Supercup, both of which I can fly reasonably well. How realistic are these simulations to the real thing? I feel if they handled similarly to the real thing then I am ready to buy a plane. I like both these models as they seem to level out by themselves if I get into trouble if I just release the controls for a moment. I would like my first real model to act in a similar way.

"I feel if they handled similarly to the real thing then I am ready to buy a plane."

A word of warning if I may...
The really hard bit about flying a new (real!) model is that you have a catch 22 situation:

It is essential that it is trimmed correctly.
The only way to achieve this is to fly it and adjust it.
This is difficult to do if you keep crashing because it is out of trim...:)

If possible, get someone who's *been there and done that*
to help you.
Join a local club, if you have one.
Also, learn about Tx discipline *before* you switch on and shoot some poor unfortunate down.

I agree with rockfist.. Now matter how well versied you are in a simulator, you should still get help from someone who's had expierence with real planes. Once you get it in the air and flying straight.. that's when your simulator skills kick in. As far as how accurate FMS is, I find that in general the alerons and elevator are a little too weak and the rudder is too strong. The physics for the rudder needs work in my opinion. But for free, FMS can't be beat.

i agree fully with the advise given above.

to answer your specific question, i dont think for someone who has never flown a model, that being able to fly a trainer in fms succesfully, is enough to give u a high chance of succes on the real thing.

if u dont have help available then go to the faster models in fms and learn to fly them in a pattren eg in an eight etc and when u can do that with any model then perhaps u might have a better chance........BUT again try get help if u want to avoid disappointment and loose cash!

goodluck.

All the advice here sounds good to me. Find a tutor before you fly. Make sure they aren't drunk.(long story, the two guys that were helping me, hand launched my Kadet upside down.)
To build on Rockfists advice, mess up the trim on your transmitter in FMS, take off, then fix it in flight.

Thanks for all the good advice guys, don't know any flyers though and not sure if there are any clubs near me. I'll keep practicing and try messing up the trim in the sim and see how I get on. I didn't think I'd manage without a few mishaps, which is why I thought the best course of action was a cheap electric slow flyer to start with. Thanks again.

GiZZeRR,
Check with a local hobby shop about a club in your area. If you aren't close to one an electric may be the way to go. Liteweight electrics can be very tricky in any wind. Have fun and don't fly anything you don't mind crashing.

You're replying to a post that's over 3 years old. He's probably learnt to fly by now :).
