Yes there is a trick: practice, practice, practice.
That's the only way you get it.
When you fly, try to keep the landscape's orientation in mind, try to keep it in mind esspecially if you fly high and dont see the ground.
To get a better feeling for the orientation try at the beginning to fly in rectangles, always flying with 90 degree curves.
Then, if you come in low finally try to keep in mind the view of the landscape you get (the trees and hills you see in that direction). And if you notice maybe that direction was right, then try for the next run to come down from the same direction... Or adjust the direction for the next time if you were not right.
If you land, do not fly too fast or too slow. Just reduce power to 20-30 % and keep the plane horizontal in air. It will first lose speed and then start to sink. Now you can pull up slightly to adjust the sink-rate. Keep the sink-rate low until you touch down.
Some planes have really powerfull engines, you have to reduce power to 10% down.
For the first landings choos a long and straight approach!
