New FMS ParkZone T-28 Trojan

Postby ggunners » Tue Jan 08, 2008 3:31 am

Hello all,

I have just completed a model of the ParkZone T-28 Trojan for .

What could be better than a scale warbird trainer. The T-28 Trojan was used as a primary trainer from the 1950's through the 1970's and saw a bit of combat too as deployed in other areas. As you would expect, this model can do everything you ask it to do. Check out the videos on the .

Wing Span: 44 in / 1118mm
Overall Length: 36 in / 914mm
Flying Weight: 30 oz / 875g
Motor Size: 480 power, 960Kv brushless outrunner
Radio: Proportional 5-channel 72MHz FM
Battery: 3-cell 11.1V 1800mAh LiPoly

If there are any ParkZone T-28 Trojan owners out there, please try the model with FMS and let me know how it flies compared to the real thing.

The sound is a pretty quiet electric motor on my computer with FMS 2 alpha 8.5. Feel free to substitute a different .wav file if you want something with more noise.

Thanks a lot! For this model of course, but also for all the other models you've made for FMS. I learnt to fly using FMS and, for the most part, your FMS models.

I've now bought my second plane. The first one was an E-Starter, and this one is a ParkZone Trojan. I sure hope it's as easy to fly as it seems in the sim - it seems to just go anywhere you point it, except perhaps that it won't go vertically upwards forever. It maneuvers quickly enough to be funny, but slow enough not to be terrifying. If anyone knows how to set up the servos on the real model to get a performance similar to the sim model, it'd be great to hear about it.

Have you heard from any more pilots comparing the model to the flying experience of the real model? (I saw sportrider_fz6 in this thread)

I'll probably spend a few hours with the model in FMS before maidening the model. I'll let you know what how it compares when I know.

Edit: I tried out the FMS model with a little wind now, and it seems *very* difficult to land even at 2 m/s, gust speed 2m/s. It hops and turns at random, suddenly banking 90 degrees just before touchdown and such. Is's really unstable at all speeds in this wind, but if you try to slow down a bit to land, I think it gets really bad. Is this an effect of some of the metrics of the airplane? I compared to some other, similar models in FMS, and this was very tricky in comparison.

Best regards,

/Fredrik

In FMS large wind gust speeds will cause any model to be almost uncontrollable. Keep the gusts down (say 0.3 m/s) and it provides that little wiggle at the wrong time to make things challenging.

I use 3 m/s wind speed, 0.3 m/s gust speed and direction 270 on the world.scn and it works pretty well for me.

Want to have a lot of fun, 9 m/s wind speed, zero gusts. What a blast.

Yes, the Trojan is harder to land than some other airplanes because it is an aileron trainer. As such, it should go where it's pointed and do what the pilot commands, even the mistakes. I find this model to land quite well with a little bit of work. Do not expect it to land by itself. You'll need to come in at a bit below half throttle and then bleed off the throttle while increasing elevator back pressure just above the run-way to land.

Very nice flyer. I would tone down the aileron as well, but Im using a MS sidewinder...maybe I have too much aileron input.

But very nice, again.

Glad to see FMS still has interest. Best FREE model flight sim ever.

Almost everyone runs FMS with EXP checked. So try turning on exponential control for aileron and rudder and see if it works better.

Anyway, that's the way the model was originally set up. With a real transmitter, I found FMS to be too twitchy around center so used the EXP check boxes instead of adjusting my transmitter's exponential.
