FMS 2.07 does not work in fullscreen and textures are messed - Help....Michael???

Postby Victor » Sat Nov 03, 2001 11:30 pm

I want to say that the new FMS is great but i am having some trouble with it. I will first list my sytem components:
Pentium 200mmx 2 video cards (#1 Ati 3D Rage,#2 Voodo 2 1000 addon) 48mg of ram

That should be sufficient. Now for my problem, FMS is usually extreemly slow on my computer in window mode which is why i use fullscreen but when i switch to that mode i gets way slower and i cannot have access to the menu bar, therefore i am forced to use window which is playable but not as much fun. Also the textures do not show up properly for me. I have to turn off smooth textures for me to actually see it correctly.

What do you think this is? My computer(do i need new drivers?) and if so what for? Thanks, i look forward to be able to use it fullscreen.

Nah, the voodo really pumps things and beta 6 worked like a movie framerate wasn't huge but high enough to be better than tv. If i could use 3d mode i could have the same performance and also fms loads slower than beta 6 but what can you do, thats the price you pay for a better sim(more power needed)

If you have an AGP slot, consider buying a Geforce II card. If you think the voodoo flies, wait till you see the geforce.

AGP on p200...not bloody likely I would think. Dude with comps so cheap these days just upgrade... p200 was my primary machine like 5 years ago.

Hello Victor

Beta 7 is maybe a little bit slower on systems with an old processor because of the crash detection. But fullscreen should also work with the new version. FMS beta 7 offers the possibility to change the color resolution. If you didn't allready try it switch to 16bit-mode and then run fullscreen.

I'd like to confirm that I am also having problems
in full screen mode.

My machine is an Athelon 700 mhz, 256m ram, tnt2 agp video card. Machine is running Win2K.

When running in windowed mode, it's perfect. My screen resolution is set at 1280x960, and even if I maximize the FMS window, it's perfectly smooth.

But if I run full-screen, at any resolution (I tried 640x480 up to 1280x1024) in 16bit or 32bit, the program stutters and hesitates. It runs smooth for a second, then very slow, then smooth again, etc. And, at one point, in 640x480 mode, it locked the computer up hard.

Also, another time, running in windowed mode, I got an access violation when I exited FMS. The error was

Instruction at "0x0041538e" referenced memory at "0x1138670" the memory could not be "read".

Michael thanks for the great simulator!

Some minor (or not so!) glitches exist on the new 2.7 beta.

My configuration
Laptop W2K Pentium 800 256 MB ATI RAGE Mobility AGP2X. (I 've re-installed the new DX8 from MS even though it is installed within W2K)

The v2.6 has 20 fps in full screen (1024X768) and 4 fps in window mode (in some viewable size!)
Instead... the v2.7 has 1 (!) fps in full screen (1024X768) and 3 fps in window mode (really small viewable size!)
The above are with all features textures etc enabled...

If you want my opinion I think that there is no difference between window and full screen in 2.7! Somehow the DX8 is not functioning correctly! I do not think that such a delay is comming from the colision lib! Probably there is something in the DX8 routines that you are using... it seems that they do not use DX8?!
Could be something in you new W2K DX8 drivers!?

Everybody knows that you've already gave us so much joy...! we are all really so thankfull to you! Do'nt get discuraged by some small glitches!

Thank you again.

Notebooks tend to have crummy 3d video performance due to cheap/office application tailored graphics chips. A laptop with the Geforce2go chip would probably perform MUCH better...

I'm running win2k in a docking station with a TNT2 32Mb card in it. Unreal Tournament and any other heavy 3D application runs great on my system. Can't seem to get better than 8fps on this new version.

Looks great though.

Another thing: Can I use my paralell port cord with Win2k now?

Some News:
I tried FMS on my brother's slower computer and it worked fine(except for the framerate<he has 160mhz overclocked to 180>). He has 48 ram, Nvidia tnt and runs win95. Yes i notice his comp is slow but it outperforms 400mhz celeron at windows stuff(not games). If i had the money i would upgrade and i am thinking about sabotaging the computer so i can get a new one, hehe just kidding.
Thank you Roman for working so hard on this sim and i truly enjoy it.

Here's a wrenchy to throw into the mix. My laptop is running an AGP 8Mb internal card and when docked a 32Mb TNT2 card (win2k, PIII 850, 512Ram) . When docked I only get 8fps, when undocked I get upwards of 70fps! Really odd!

When running Unreal tournament it's exactly the opposite.

Greetings to all.
I wanted to give my opinion too.
Im in the trails of FMS from the begining.
One thing i can say is that im afraid that one
day im gonna have to pay to get the latest
version of this wonderfull sim.I hope not...:o)
Im playing with the beta 7 version in two machines.
The one(desktop) has a PIII 733 with 256 ram and a geforce 2 graphics card. The sim run absolutely wonderfull. The second is a notebook siemens scenic
with a PII (dont remember Mhz) with 128 Mb ram and a ati graphics card.In this comp the sim doesnt play of course as in the desktop but i can say that i can manage it to play for a couple of hours in the trips i make. The best upgrade wasnt just in the graphics
of the new version. On my opinion it was in the calibration of the radio.I have no glitching!!

Thanx guys its been a wonderfull sim.Keep going like this, you are great.

Emmanuel.
