is DirectX really used?

Hi,

my configuration is win2k + DirectX 9.0b

Everytime I re-install FMS and start it the first time it complains that I should install DirectX 7 or higher. I can choose to ignore or simple do not start FMS. Of course, I choose ignore. But then, am I missing something in terms of display rendering and performance? I have not seen FMS but only in my machine, so, I cannot do any comparison.
