Getting started w/ FMS and Heli's - What do you recommend?

Postby kabbink » Sun Aug 17, 2003 6:09 am

Hello,

I want to learn to fly an RC Helicopter and cam accross your training program. Being totally new to RC I need a couple of recomendations.

Should I just buy a controller compatible with your program first and then learn and buy the heli later? Should I buy it all together? I found this ebay auction:

and was wondering if it was a good deal?

I would like to learn on something as cheap as possible and then if I like it move up to something a little more expensive (and more fun!)

Any help would be appreciated...I need lots of it and it is hard to find!

Also: Will FMS run on windows XP?

Thanks in advance!

FMS will run XP, the problem is the interface supplied with the auction item will you need a different version.

What do you think of the auction I had listed....do you think that is a good deal?

Or do you think I should start by purchasing a control and then later a helicopter to go with it?

Thanks for the advice!

Also found this auction:

For just the control with the interface for WinXP. Would a control like this be good for most Heli's and how much would the servos/receiver cost?

Thanks and sorry for all the dumb questions!

Ok one more question....sorry guys...im just filling my own thread up!

But I know this isnt really the place to ask these kind of newbie questions so I was wondering if anyone could point me to another forum or chat room or something where I could ask these kind of questions and not just make everyone mad!

thanks!!

I am just starting with helis and have purchased a small heli like the 1 in the auction, but was advised to purchase a 30 size because the smaller one is alot more differcult to fly. So i now have a raptor 30 V2.

;)

The new radio you have indicated is not a heli set it does not have any throttle curve settings etc for helis, so I would not advise buying that for helis. Other may say differently, but that is my opion.

You could try the news group as well rec.models.rec.helicopter.

I hope this is of some help. I assume you are in the states because of your ebay links.

One of the best Helis to get started with is the LMH120 (Thats what i heard). It is a lightweight Heli.

But in general you can say that larger models are easier to fly.
It depends on the influece of wind and mass of the model. Because if a model is heavier it is not shaken so much by turbulences...

Buying such a kit (including FMS) is probably illegal because FMS is non-commercial Software. I'm not sure wheather Michael and Roman Moeller allow others to sell their FMS...

The other thing on those offers is: the seller wants to make his product attractive by putting a simulator into the kit. That is to make it more valuable.
But how can you make a RC-Heli more valuable by a COST FREE simulation??

For me this offer is suspicious!!!!

I recommend: just download FMS for free, take a normal Joystick or analog Gamepad (with 2 Sticks) and try to fly some rounds...

If you then still believe a RC-heli is what you really want, buy a LMH 120 or similar model with a good controler (which you can later use for other models too).
