how about an idiot's guide for a 'new boy'

Hi all,
I have never used a R/C flight sim before, and after stumbling across this forum thought FMS would be a good place to start! I have down loaded the basic prog. I need to make a lead so i can use my TX with it, but at the moment I'm having fun with a pc joystick
i would really like to get some of the new backgrounds and models to work with FMS, but as a complete computer novice i can't seem to work out how you actually down load them and insert them in the prog.
So far I have managed (somehow) to down load one model with no colour, but lost every other preset model, and one background but lost all the preset ones :?
Is it possible that someone could take the time to write up an idiot's guides on exactly how to get these working in the prog. (and keep the original ones!) then perhaps paste it as a sticky for all new comers like myself to see first thing in the forum. I'm sure it would greatly help out those of us that are more computer challenged! to get onboard with you and start enjoying some of the great work you have all put in to this prog.
Many thanks,
Walts.
P.S. I use windows XP if that is of any use to you :)

Here's a link to smartpro when you decide to use your TX instead
http://www.geocities.com/shaul_ei/SmartPropoPlus.html

You got it running ...it's a good sign.

Warning !!!
If you download sceneries for FMS..you need to convert all
the .jpeg images files into .bmp files (24bits)
EXCLUDING the _prv file. (preview)
Just click on the ZIP folder then you'll see all the files it that zip.
Any paint or art software will do...or a batch converter.
Somtimes FMS will do strange things when the image files
are not in the correct formate. At the very least you'll see
an error message. It use to crash mine.

Think of those images files as if they are Ipod or mp3, mp4 files...etc
Just dfferent formats...that is all.

.bmp files takes up more memory and download time,
so the aurthor converted them into .jpeg to compress them.
You just need to convert them back.

If you download 2.85..(which is the lastest version)
But loaded a 2.7 version model ..somtimes it'll do that.
It's wierd and the wierdness may very.lol
Sometimes if you start FMS again the model will show
or if you trun off the TRUE alpha (shadows) in the graphic options
the model will apprear. However you'll get white shadows.

But most models will work in 2.85

To correct a 2.7 model or make it work properly
in 2.85. All you have to do is replace the model's .par file
with a 2.85 .par file. Copy a good .par file
Rename it the same as the 2.7 model's .par you want to replace
and just replace it. As simple as that.

Some models are scale guilders and require you to hand luanch
or winch luanch. Simply press <R> to launch it.
In other words somtimes a model will load on the runway
and won't move..so think there's something wrong with the
models or your TX.

To load the models or landscape into FMS
<right> click on the mouse over the zip folder.
You'll see different options..
Select <extract all>

Then a window will apprear. Use this path
Drive/Programfiles/FMS/model

For landscape it's : programfiles/FMS/landscape

However you do not need to extract the model/landscape into
FMS.
Create a new folder for a model and simply just copy all the
files in the zip folder into the new folder.
(drag and drop or copy and paste)
Rename the new folder accordingly.

Manage your files as you would with anything else I guess.
I choose this route instead becuase I can manage my
models and landscapes better. Each model/landscape
has it's own folder as a sub-folder.

If you extract everything into FMS's folder, after a while
you'll get thousands of files in a folder.
If you what to change the model's skin, perimeter..it's a bit
tough to sort through. Plus everything must be named different
all the time. The PC do not recognize names as names
or comprehend mis-spelled words as a misspelled words or
a mis type.

That's how we get all the errors.lol

FMS can retrieve or read files from anywhere as long as they
are not ZIP (closed)
Click the arrow pionting< down> , after you select model to load
in FMS. This will bring up a file path tree.

FMS has 2 types of landscapes
3d and photolistic.

Photolistic sceneries will only work in 2.85
When in photolistic mode TRUN OFF the FOG.
In most cases the photolistic images will be .jpeg when you download
them. Again, you must convert them into 24bit .bmp files.

Thanks very much smcxx66 for your swift reply. It was very useful and I have been having fun today uploading new scieneries and models. All seems to be working as advertised, I can't wait to get my TX set up now so I can practice flying the way i do at the field instead of playing FMS like a game with the pc joystick!
Thanks again GREAT forum, really helpful!
Cheers,
Walts :)
